2004.1: A Look At the Screen - Media Education (De Olho Na Tela)

De Olho na Tela (A Look at the Screen) is a media education course that aims to provide an understanding of the media through careful observation and analysis. Students, during the first semester since the initiative that began March 2004, have studied Radio, Press (newspapers and magazines), and the Internet.

Deeper issues that are behind the media we experience came up, as students were encouraged to question this information, such as; race, stereotypes, manipulation of the media, and propaganda. Media Sana’s  Gabriel Furtado and Queops Negão brought their knowledge and expertise to the students during a special class on propaganda. The art collective uses VJ (video jockey) techniques as well as recycling media to get their message to the viewer.

The next stage was for students to produce their own media that is relevant to their age, their peers, their community and their world. This semester, students produced Fanzines, an alternative, grass-roots form of media that requires little material; pens, paper, photo-copy machine and creativity. Shortly afterwards, they took on the challenge of bringing their Fanzines to a more technological level: E-zines. Check out the ABA website for the results of this experiment.

A deeper look at television and video production is on the horizon for next September.
